For us Indians , the cell phone is the greatest Connector of Life – the real social elixir from Ether , next only to ” Amrit ” the heavenly nectar from the Gods . We have mastered the art of driving a two wheeler with one hand , cocking our shoulder to one side with a cell phone firmly placed on the side of our neck , crossing a busy road while talking on a cell phone , sending SMS to win contests on TV , and a host of other acrobatic postures while engaging the other party on a conversation . Soon , we will see more novel methods with the introduction of 3 G Phones , dual sim phones and touch screens becoming commodities .
Gone are the days when one wrote a letter or post card or even used a pager . The value added services on video and audio formats and freebies like astrology , movie alert etc made phone calls an incidental use for a cell phone .
Recently, I was traveling by air from Kochi to Hyderabad . The passenger next to me got down with me and started a call , probably to his sweet heart and gave her a running commentary on the airport layout , the bus travel to the terminal , the sights and sound at the airport , the delicious menu available while flying , the beautiful air hostess with her friendly manners , the conveyor belt bringing baggage from below and the exit to the outside world . What a great experience to remain connected !!.
You travel by train , and you can get continuous update from co-passengers, free , on stock market updates , cost of seeds , cricket scores , update on some one’s spouse’s kitty party or his children ‘s play at the school . You are connected to the world always and every time . Who is complaining about any privacy ? .
Long live the Cell Phone !!
