CIAL (Cochin International Airport Ltd) in Kerala, India has come out with another first – an integrated hub for travel and tourism through a partnership model with various service providers. This is a highly innovative approach to promote tourism in “God’s Own Country” especially at a time when eco-tourism and medical tourism have become money spinners for the State. When CIAL was launched almost a decade ago through public equity without any government support, it was a first in India. The promoters had to overcome many bureaucratic hurdles and initial slump in the economy to break even and thereafter make profits. Today, the airport hub can boast of many international carriers operating on daily basis in addition to a substantial movement of cargo. An international standard golf course has been added recently and many other facilities for business travelers are on the anvil.

CIAL should now look at attracting investments in the state by playing the role of a facilitator and catalyst. The Smart City coming up nearby can be supported by arranging package business tours by CIAL  along with convention centers of global standards. The forest wealth of Kerala along with fisheries, minerals and raw material for nuclear power etc. can help develop the state and CIAL alongwith the state government can create an integrated frame work  for business growth. I wish the CIAL all sucess in their future endeavours.
