The 3rd of February 2008 is a new landmark day in the annals of leadership practice globally. This day has witnessed a truly home grown “Made in India” initiative by the Project Management Institute [PMI], Pearl City Chapter[PCC], Hyderabad who took the path breaking step of declaring this day as “The International Student Leadership Day” and organized a congregation of more than 500 students in the age group of 12 to 22 and initiated them to the concept of leadership. The students took a pledge to practice leadership and demonstrated the spirit of leadership with a 3 KM walk on the necklace road carrying the national flag and singing patriotic songs all the way. This simple but impressive event was also organized at Delhi and Pune and also at Washington DC under PMI arrangements.

It is generally accepted that leaders are made and not born. If this is true, why not initiate leaders young at the student stage. This is the motive behind the PMI initiative and in the years to come, this step will be remembered as a great international movement. In the prevailing leadership crisis globally, we need fresh thoughts on leadership and new perspectives for execution. The “Leadership Body of Knowledge[LBOK] being developed by PMI PCC on the lines of PMBOK[Project management body of knowledge]of PMI, USA will have far reaching impact on the society at large soon.

The LBOK works on six edicts to develop young leaders who will be visionaries, execution champions, continuous learners, excellent communicators, extra ordinary team players and those who will willingly run an extra mile and all this in the spirit of volunteerism. A great concept to develop future industry and nation ready leaders which needs our whole hearted support and encouragement.

I was privileged to be present during this occasion at the Hyderabad event.
