MANAGEMENT MANTRA  – TRAINING AND EDUCATION

The word TRAINING comes from the Latin word ‘TRAHERE’, which means ” to drag or to draw “. The word EDUCATION comes from the Latin word ‘DUCERE’, which means ” to lead “. If you are training your employees without educating them, you are dragging them towards your goals. On the other hand, If you are educating them, you are leading them towards your goals. When you lead people, you induce them to follow you of their own free will and in their own self-interest. When that happens, you and they join in a common effort to achieve excellence. With good technical TRAINING enhanced by a well rounded EDUCATION, your organisation will have what it takes to survive and thrive in the new, fast-paced, quality-demanding market place.

Nido R Qubein in his recently published book ” Achieving Peak Performance ” has listed 10 distinctions between training and education. They are :

  • Training teaches people what to do, Education teaches people what to
  • Training is anchored to the past, Education looks towards the future
  • When circumstances change, Training has to be unlearned. Education can be built upon.
  • Training deals with actions. Education deals with thoughts and feelings
  • Training teaches how ? Education teaches why ?
