The media reports tell us that the total amount of Indian Money [ mostly black ] in secret Swiss Bank accounts is merely a 0.7 percent of the total amounts in those banks . Therefore , why this fuss which politicians make these days ? . We also know now that the Chinese [ a communist country ] has much more stashed there compared to capitalist Indians. The government is at pains to explain the difficulties in publishing the names as it will compromise bilateral agreements with that country .
The real issue here seems to be one of misplaced focus . Any smart Indian with unaccounted money will prefer to keep it away from any bank , Swiss banks included , to avoid any tell tale marks . This has been our tradition for centuries . Metallic urns dug inside the earth , Beds , secret cellars all came handy to our ancestors to store ill gotten wealth and hide it from public scrutiny . Technology and sophisticated banking services with confidentiality and security have not materially changed our habits in this regard .
I am reminded of an old novel written by PG Wodehouse titled ” Money in the Bank ” where every heir search for the money left behind by a deceased person which he had stated openly while alive that it is in the bank which finally turns out to be at the bank of a river !
