In India , if there is one cadre which is the most vulnerable but still largely sought after for employment is the Police Force . No less a person than the Home Minister of the Central Government has admitted publicly that the selection , recruitment , career management and assignment to duty – all aspects of policing in India is riddled with corruption – a sad reflection of our lack of morality in dealing with Public Institutions.
A policeman is an object of ridicule in Indian movies , he does not even have a place to sit in many a police station . He works more than 12 hours a day and does many avoidable work thanks to the number of VIP duties they are called upon to perform . Other than special forces , the common policeman is ill – equipped to deal with law and order or investigation of crime . On top of it , they are under staffed and get one of the lowest salary in this country .
In most cases , policemen are at the mercy of politicians and the bureaucracy and cannot really function independent of such pressures . Exceptions are there but they do not prove anything .
Many studies have been done in the past to institute reforms in policing in India but so far we have done only lip service to the reports . In this technology savvy 21st Century , it is an anachronism to keep such standards of policing as is found in India . It is high time , we wake up and do something meaningful to overhaul the police system in our country.
