The management trainer is the Chief Executioner of the great management dream factory. Being both prophet and a missionary, he tells wonderful tales of a new golden age of management in which all executives will be logical, rational, and completely devoted to the interests of the organisation. To enter into the kingdom of the effective manager all that is needed, it would seem, is that you should manage by objectives, motivate your subordinates, and delegate large chunks of your job at every conceivable opportunity.
Unhappily, executive leopards do not change their spots so easily; indeed, why should they when so many of them are so comfortably ensconced on the upper branches of the management tree? It is this awful dichotomy between management theory and corporate practice which transforms so many management trainers from enthusiastic prophets of a brave new world into frustrated, cynical nihilists, old before their time. After all, it is difficult to go on preaching that managerial crime does not pay when a cursory glance upwards shows that it can .
