I was the second – in – command of a technical battalion of the Indian Army deployed in Sikkim in 1979-81 . During the Annual Administration Inspection by the Divisional Commander , it is customary and part of the inspection for the   General to see the standard of weapon training of the battalion .

The Commanding officer escorted the General to the firing range and I met them there and gave orders for the first detail of 10 soldiers including one young officer to fire the weapons . The results were very good .

The General commented that probably I hand picked our best shooters for this demonstration . He then asked me to pick 10 men at random from among those who were filling ammunition , doing sentry duty at the range and repairing the targets after each shoot . I obliged and got another 10 men lined up for the second round . The results were excellent . The General was impressed .

After the inspection was over , my commanding officer asked me how I manged to pull it off . I told him my secret . We held the ” A ” team in reserve anticipating this move from the General . It was a calculated risk but it payed off !!.
