The Indian Army celebrates Army Day on 15th Jan every year to commemorate Late General Cariappa’s [ later elevated to the rank of Field Marshal] appointment as the first Commander in Chief of Independent India in 1948. This day is also used to remember those who served the country well both in War and Peace time and made sacrifices for the country .
Ironically from year 2012 onwards this day will also be remembered for the first time when a serving Chief of Army Staff [General V K Singh] filed a case in the Supreme Court of India against the Government to settle a discrepancy over his date of birth as recorded in the Military Secretary’s Branch at the Army HQ !
I have no value judgment to offer here as I have also served 25 years back at the Army HQ in the same branch and I have no hard information except what is being projected in the media . But this is certainly a new trend and indicates the “shape of things to come ” while dealing with the country’s most reliable instrument of power and national security !
