Many public institutions who serve people suffer at times from VIP interference. Some people do not complain but there are some who do not tolerate such intrusions in their routine. I wish to narrate a true incident which I witnessed some time back at Delhi when I was serving at the Army HQ.
My mother was admitted for diabetic complications at the Army Hospital, Delhi, and during one evening when I was with her at her bed side, I heard a commotion at the other end of the Officers ward. One Brigadier in uniform was shouting at the nursing staff and others creating a scene and disturbing every one around with total disregard to the rules demanding silence and decorum at the place where many patients with serious ailments are being attended to. I knew that he was holding a very important position at the Army HQ and he was known for such temper tantrums. His complaint was his mother who is also admitted is not getting the right attention which she should have got by virtue of his rank and position.
After a few minutes, the medical specialist, a major, who was on a visit to the ward confronted this officer and told him :
“Brigadier —— , you may be anyone at the Army HQ but we do not care. Your mother will get all the attention required for her nature of illness here and NOT based on your position. Now, will you stop disturbing every one here, or I will have to get you thrown out from the ward?” The Brigadier, with a red face, disappeared from the place.
A familiar scene at hospitals, government offices, airports etc., you agree !!
