Recently there has been a lot of debate in public on the ideal width for a highway in the state of Kerala  in India .  As the population density is very high in this near 100 percent literate state ,  the Government of  India has already ,  I understand, has given a waiver to reduce the width to only 45 meters from the prescribed norm of 60 meters . The state government is now wanting it further reduced to 30 meters to avoid huge costs in land acquisition .

If this is the state government ‘s retrograde stand on such a major developmental issue linked to growth and prosperity of the state , then why have any highway at all in Kerala ? . May be there is a creative solution to this problem embedded in the word HIGHWAY  itself !!. Make highways in a literal sense on pillars above the ground  and pay for only pillar rights to land owners similar to paying for roof  rights to erect communication towers for mobile phone service providers . You can have ramps to go up or come down wherever required. At least  the motorists will not encounter any stray cattle en route !!!.

  1. Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.
