The humans always aspired to fly to cover distances in quick time . The parables abound with stories of magic carpets and the ” Star Trek ” series gave us hopes that some day man will be able to propel himself in the sky like the giant birds .
We are not satisfied with supersonic jets or even our capability to send manned vehicles to the Moon or Mars . We want to use technology and get free from the discomfort and rigors of road travel all by ourselves . Just like we drive a car , we want to move in the air at great speed going to work or on any other vocation on Jet Packs , Rocket Belts or Personal Helicopters .
One of the major impediment which comes in the way of personal transportation by air could be the prohibitive cost of fuel itself , not to talk about other hazards or security aspects related to it . But more than that , I feel we have not tried enough to exploit technology in this direction except using hot air balloons or microlight aircraft for sports purpose . While in telecommunication and computing , we have come a long way , the technology has lagged so far when it comes to personal aerial transportation.
May be a day will come when we will get wings operated electronically with miniaturized fuel cells with long endurance and be free to fly in the air! . How about an air – land SEGWAY ?
