In India , we celebrate 5th September every year as the ” Teachers Day ” honoring the memory of our late philosopher President of the Republic Dr S Radhakrishnan .
It is said that when a student is ready , a teacher appears . Also , there is an old eastern saying that – the teacher and the taught together create the teaching ” . It is a very sacred relationship and also a ” win -win deal ” for the right combination.
On this day , I remember a few of my teachers and some of my mentors during my later work life . My maths teacher Mr George Thomas was an expert in relating dry maths topics to real life examples so that the lessons are understood by all in the correct perspective . One example – The inverse of a theorem may not be true , a crow is black in color but all that is black are not crows !! .
Then , there was Mr Panicker who taught us Vibrations and its complexity in machine designs during my engineering degree days . I remember his marathon extra classes till we all understood the topic well . I also remember Colonel Heet who taught me management theory and helped me pick up a liking for this discipline which later on enabled me to get a CGPA of 10 out of 10 in my MBA . Prof Upender Dhar of DAVV Indore also mentored me during my MBA course and encouraged me to reach out to my full potential .
I learned my Leadership lessons from late General Shamsher Singh , my Brigade Commander and General B C Nanda , to whom I was the staff officer in the Military Secretary’s Branch at the Army HQ . General Narahari showed me how to challenge the status quo and think on your feet when I was his student at the College of Combat , Mhow .
Life is a crucible for learning – life long learning and learners and teachers can make all that vital difference between success and failure . Long Live the Teaching profession to which I now belong !!.
That’s really tihnknig out of the box. Thanks!
